The European Union has not surveyed the upcoming election

An article on the Lanka e News website reported that the latest survey conducted by the European Union in Sri Lanka revealed that the National People's Power is currently leading in the upcoming presidential election.

According to the alleged survey, the article stated that there has been a significant change in voter preferences as 53 percent of the surveyed had preferred NPP’s presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The said survey had placed Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB’s) candidate Sajith Premadasa in second place according to “voter preferences”, with a percentage of twenty-four. Additionally, voters between the ages of 18 and 19 had allegedly questioned the legitimacy of Sajith Premadasa’s London School of Economics (LSE) degree in the said survey.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) had a voter preference of six percent of and President Ranil Wickramasinghe had a voter preference of 5 percent, while 12 percent of the surveyed remained indecisive.

Stepping in to investigate the alleged survey, FactSeeker observed that the official website and the official X (formally twitter) account of EU Embassy in Sri Lanka and the Maldives had not published a survey in this regard.

FactSeeker made an inquiry to the media division of the EU Embassy, who confirmed that a survey had not being conducted, verifying that the alleged survey was false.

Additionally, the European Union issued a statement on the official X account that the embassy had not conducted any survey regarding the upcoming elections in Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, FactSeeker confirms that the article published by Lanka e News alleging that a survey was conducted by the Embassy of the European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives is false.
