The viral posts include a photo purportedly showing President Anura Kumara Dissanayake paying respects to Madush at his funeral and another image depicting the President and NPP members attending a funeral.

Given the rapid spread of these claims, FactSeeker conducted an investigation to verify their authenticity.

A Google Reverse Image search of the image showing the President paying homage to Madush’s body revealed that the original photo had been altered. It was confirmed that the circulating version had been digitally manipulated to misrepresent the event.

Additionally, the second photo was traced back to the funeral of a relative of a Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) member. Upon further inquiry, FactSeeker reached out to JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva, who confirmed that the image was taken during the funeral of his mother.

Moreover, an official letter from the Government Information Department to the Inspector General of Police was discovered, requesting an investigation into the false social media posts and legal action against those responsible for spreading misinformation.

Therefore, FactSeeker confirms that the claims circulating on social media about President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and NPP members attending the funeral of Makandure Madush are entirely false. One of the images has been digitally manipulated, while the other is unrelated to Madush’s funeral.
