A sponsorship letter addressed to Wasantha Samarasinghe, National Executive Committee Member of the National People’s Power (NPP) allegedly from the Dilmah Company is being circulating on social media.

FactSeeker observed that a letter dated May 14, 2021, carried the signature of the company’s late owner Merrill J. Fernando.

The letter stated that although the company had allegedly paid a sum of 15 lakhs (1,500,000 rupees), an individual claiming to be a National Executive Committee Member continued to threaten the company. The alleged sponsorship sums up to 40 million and was allegedly agreed upon to be paid in three installments.

FactSeeker looked into the alleged statement and observed that mainstream media had not reported of such sponsorship.

When inquired, Wasantha Weerasinghe told FactSeeker that the letter was false, and was created with an intent of shaming the party.

The Dilmah company issued a statement denying the letter signed by the Company Secretary Jayanga Wegodapola.

Accordingly, FactSeeker confirms that the letter allegedly claiming Dilmah’s sponsorship is false.
