Dilith Jayaweera was named as the Presidential Candidate of the ‘Sarvajana Balaya’ alliance recently.

The letter which claimed that the candidate has decided to step down due to “personal reasons” had expressed his gratitude to the party for nominating him for the presidential race.

Posts on Facebook with captions such as “Dilith Jayaweera out of presidential race” caught the attention of FactSeeker, and proceeded to fact-check the said claim.

When FactSeeker inquired the said aim from the leader of Mawbima Janata Party Hemakumara Nanayakkara, he confirmed that the claim was false. He further stated that that Jayaweera will also issue a statement in this regard.

Further investigations of this letter, revealed that the said letter was prepared by editing Dhammika Perera’s letter resignation from the presidential candidacy representing the Podujana Peramuna.

Accordingly, FactSeeker confirms that posts circulating on social media claiming Dilith Jayaweera’s decision to step down from the upcoming presidential election is false.
