A letter issued by the UNP against the court’s decision regarding former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon is sharing on social media.

Factseeker observed this article sharing on social media on 22.07.2025, under the headline “Arbitrary decision given to Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon”, on a letterhead bearing the official logo of the UNP and signed by its Chairman, Vajira Abeywardena.

“The current government has taken a historic decision today to add a black mark to the reputation of the Sri Lanka Police. It is unjust for the current government to act in a way that damages his image by heaping mistakes upon mistakes by removing Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon, who has been actively involved in the Sri Lanka Police Department and has dedicated his life to ensuring the rule of law, from his post with the approval of a certain committee,” the article stated.
The article is below.

Factseeker checked the facts to see if the UNP had issued such an article.
Accordingly, we checked the websites of mainstream newspapers today and couldn’t find any such article published.
We checked whether there was such an article on the official website of the UNP, but no such article had been published there either.
Then, when checking the official Facebook page of the UNP, a note was found in this regard. It was stated that this article was a fake article.

“The article sharing on social media titled “Regarding the arbitrary decision given to Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon” is completely false. The article has been forged using the letterhead of the UNP and no such article has been issued by me or the United National Party. Legal action will be taken in this regard in the future,” Vajira Abeywardena’s post stated.

Accordingly, Factseeker confirms that the article sharing on social media titled “Regarding the arbitrary decision given to Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon” is a fake article.
