The incident of a baby left under a tree in a paddy field has been a hot topic of discussion on social media and in the mainstream media these days.
The baby left in a paddy field in the Paragahadeniya area of Mawathagama, Kurunegala, was found on the 17th. Later, many news and information regarding this circulated in the mainstream media as well as through social media.
Although the police had initiated investigations to find the mother of this baby, media reports had reported that no information about her has been found so far.
Despite this situation, it was observed that a video showing the mother of the baby having been arrested by the police and the statement she gave there was circulating on social media. Upon investigation, it was revealed that it was the statement of the mother of the baby who was found dumped in a toilet on the “Meenagaya” night mail train from Colombo to Batticaloa in 2023.
Factseeker observed that a video and several photos taken from it, purportedly of the baby found, were circulating on social media.
However, as there were no acceptable notes regarding this video and photos, Factseeker investigated this matter.
It was revealed that this video, purportedly of the Mawathagama baby, had also been posted on Instagram in May 2025.
Further investigation revealed that the video was first shared by the Instagram account IHAAN AIZEL on April 26th.

Some users had also posted on social media regarding this.
Accordingly, Factseeker confirms that the video and photos circulating on social media, claiming to be of the baby found left in a paddy field in Mawathagama, are not of the baby.
These facts make it clear that this video was released on social media before the Mawathagama baby was found.
