The Nelu flower also known as a monocarpic flower has recently become a trending topic among Sri Lankans.

This is because the rare opportunity to witness the Nelu blooming, which happens only once every 12 years, has arisen within the highly sensitive ecosystem unique to Horton Plains.

FactSeeker observed several images circulating on social media that allegedly show local tourists damaging the Nelu plants while visiting Horton Plains to view the flowers.

The photo in question had been shared across Facebook and reached over two thousand users, generating a wave of comments and criticism in the comment sections.

However, upon closer examination, several factors raised doubts about the authenticity of the image, such as its low quality and the fact that people in the picture were dressed in regular clothing unsuitable for a cold region like Horton Plains.

To verify whether it was AI-generated, FactSeeker analyzed the image using three different AI detection tools. Each confirmed, with 99% certainty, that the photo had been created using artificial intelligence.

Based on these findings, FactSeeker confirms that the image showing individuals allegedly damaging Nelu plants in Horton Plains is AI-generated and not real.
