Iran banned broadcasting Olympic women’s events?

The fact seeker confirmed that this was a video designed to carry out a satirical attack.

Recently, a satirical video of Iran’s Olympic events being broadcasted on the country’s television channels went viral on social media. It was circulated not only within the country but also in many foreign countries.

Is there really a broadcast censorship in Iran? Factseeker looked into this immediately.

In 2013, the video was broadcasted on YouTube channel OnTen TV and it was observed that it was presented as mere entertainment and satire. This video was broadcast on the channel on episode 51st and 57th. It’s called “Women and Sports.” Factseeker confirmed that this would not apply to the 2024 Olympic broadcasts.

Since 1979, when Iranian women compete in or outside Iran, the Iranian Olympic Committee has enacted a law that “severely punishes those who do not follow Islamic rules in sporting events”. But factseeker’s investigation revealed that such a law is not imposed on women in Iran. According to the Times of Israel website, after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Iranian women were banned from participating in men’s football, swimming and wrestling competitions. This is based on the video. But in April 2006, the Iranian president at the time Mahmoud Ahmadinejad again allowed Iranian women to enter stadiums.

As a result, the country’s policies adopted especially regarding women are considerably relaxed in Iran. This is further illustrated by the fact that an Iranian woman won the first Olympic gold medal for Iran in 2016.

In Iran, television broadcasts have sometimes made such cuts. In 2021, Iran’s state television channel blocked a Football Premier League tournament in England because an assistant referee was wearing sportswear that revealed her legs. It’s the company’s decision. It was included in The Times of Israel on 04.15. The Times of Israel further stated that without it the government would not have imposed such a law.  Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya, BBC, etc.  Olympic broadcasts do not include such censorship.

The fact seeker confirmed that this was a video designed to carry out a satirical attack. Fact checks have been carried out in different countries in this regard and they are also included below.
