Several posts circulating social media regarding commemorations to remember members of the northern Tamil community who lost their lives during the war caught the attention of FactSeeker, as among these posts was a photo featuring a young woman allegedly holding the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) flag.

As the LTTE is a banned terrorist organization under Sri Lankan law, the government has issued a directive prohibiting the use of LTTE symbols, flags, and banners during commemorative events.

Despite this, the image of the young woman holding the LTTE flag continued to circulate on social media, with claims that it was taken during a remembrance event in northern Sri Lanka.

To verify the authenticity of this image, FactSeeker conducted an investigation. During the search, the Facebook account where the image was originally posted was examined, but no data was found on the account at the time.

The image was uploaded on May 20. This time frame coincides with an LTTE commemoration event held in France. According to a report on the Tamil Guardian website, a commemoration took place in Clichy, France, on May 18:

Further investigation into the event’s location revealed references to “de la Republique” and “de la Bataille” in Clichy:

Using Google Maps, FactSeeker was able to confirm the exact location where the photograph was taken. The image was captured at the conclusion of the commemoration event at de la Bataille in Clichy:

Based on these findings, FactSeeker confirms that the image was not taken during a commemoration in northern Sri Lanka as initially claimed, but rather at a commemoration event in Clichy, France.
