A video circulating on social media claims that India shared the location of an Iranian naval ship with Israel, which allegedly led to the ship being attacked and destroyed. The video suggests that Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi made this statement during the Raisina Dialogue event.

The video has been widely shared online amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel.

In this video, General Upendra Dwivedi is portrayed as saying:

“We are closely monitoring the situation in Iran. Israel is a close ally. The sinking of the Iranian naval ship is indeed unfortunate, but it happened in international waters. As long as Iranian ships remain in Indian waters, they are protected. However, when they cross into international waters, as Israel’s strategic allies it was our duty to inform Israel about their exact location as part of a newer strategic deal.”

“So you are wrong to assume that Iranian naval ships were destroyed within Indian territory. What Israel does in international waters is their business. We can provide Israel with location or intelligence, but we had no part in the Israeli and US joint torpedo attack. They did their business. It is Iran’s war and India has nothing to do with it. Our focus remains on Pakistan, and Israel will help us in achieving that goal. We remain grateful to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for helping us secure permission to import Russian fuel,” he adds.

Political reactions to the viral video

Former Sri Lankan Member of Parliament Wimal Weerawansa also commented on the circulating video. Speaking to the media, he stated:

“The Indian Army Chief reportedly said that the Iranian ship was given protection while it was travelling within Indian maritime boundaries, and that once it entered international waters, India shared its location with Israel according to an agreement between the two countries. This is like ‘inviting someone to your wedding and then informing their enemy when they return home’. Could a country engage in such a disgraceful act? Due to the destructive action India allegedly carried out against the Iranian ship, Sri Lanka was eventually forced to intervene. This action by India is an embarrassment to the entire South Asian region.”

Wimal Weerawansa’s comments were featured as news on Hiru TV and as a front-page story in the Thinakkural newspaper.

FactSeeker’s verification

FactSeeker investigated the video circulating on social media claiming that General Upendra Dwivedi made these remarks. Our analysis found that the video is a deepfake.

What is the Real Background?

In the actual video from the ‘Raisina Dialogue’ held on March 7, 2026, General Upendra Dwivedi participated in an interview with Harsh V. Pant, Vice President of the Observer Research Foundation (ORF). During this session, he spoke exclusively about security challenges from Pakistan and India’s border security status. He noted that there has been no significant change in Pakistan’s behavior following ‘Operation Sindoor’ and emphasized that India must remain vigilant. He stated that technical assistance and information sharing received by the Pakistani military from other countries remains a primary concern for India’s defense planning.

There was absolutely no mention of an Iranian ship during this discussion.

The footage was altered using AI technology to mislead the public. Furthermore, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit of the Indian government has officially confirmed that the video is completely false and is an AI-generated deepfake.

The Times of India has also published reports debunking this misinformation.

Conclusion:
FactSeeker confirms that the video claiming General Upendra Dwivedi admitted to sharing the location of an Iranian ship with Israel is a digitally manipulated deepfake. Consequently, the statements made by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa were based on this fraudulent evidence.
