Debunking the AI Fakes and Recycled Footage Detracting From the Venezuela Earthquake Reality

Misleading
Misleading

Following a deadly twin earthquake in Venezuela, FactSeeker exposed viral social media clips-including rubbery swaying skyscrapers-as AI-generated fabrications and recycled historical footage.

June 26, 2026

On June 24, 2026, north-central Venezuela was struck by a devastating doublet earthquake event. A magnitude 7.2 foreshock was followed just 39 seconds later by a massive 7.5 magnitude mainshock, leaving over 160 people dead, thousands injured, and causing major structural damage in Caracas and coastal La Guaira.

However, alongside genuine footage of citizen journalism and frantic rescue efforts, platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook have been inundated with viral videos that are entirely fake or deeply misleading.

To separate fact from fiction, FactSeeker has investigated the top viral claims currently misleading millions of viewers worldwide. Our forensic investigation breaks down these visuals into two primary types of deception: AI-generated hyper-real simulations and recycled historical footage.

The Mirage of Disaster: Deconstructing the Visual Deceptions

When analyzing the viral threads circulating on social media, the misinformation falls neatly into four distinct case studies.

1. The AI-Generated Swaying Skyscrapers

A terrifying video showing massive high-rise apartment complexes swaying violently, bending like rubber, and shedding debris went viral across X and Facebook. High-reach accounts shared the footage, accumulating millions of views by claiming it showed the immediate, horrific impact of the disaster inside Venezuela.

The Claims Monitored: Shared on X by profiles including `@umerpashtoon`, `@Leonizm351`, `@ashokshera94`, and `@warsurv`, alongside Facebook Reel ID: `1207468238126920`.

The FactSeeker Evidence: A thorough digital forensic investigation reveals that this video is completely fabricated. As demonstrated in our verification image, the exact same digital rendering was circulating online more than a year before this disaster. The original footage was posted to Facebook as early as February 11, 2025, by user JoJo Liew.

The AI Visual Tell: A closer inspection of the physics exposes its artificial nature. Steel-reinforced concrete structures do not possess fluid elasticity. Rather than cracking rigidly or crumbling structurally, the buildings warp smoothly like rubber- a classic hallmark of an AI video generator or digital physics simulation engine.

The Verdict:  FABRICATED / AI-GENERATED

2.Demolition of a 15-Story Building Mislabeled as Active Collapse

A second viral wave of misinformation features a dramatic, high-spectacle video of a massive 15-story residential building leaning forward and collapsing entirely in a cloud of dust.

The Claims Monitored: Shared by verified and high-reach X accounts including `@SilentlySirs`, `@M0SC0W0`, `@earcos`, and `@GuntherEagleman`, claiming it captured a building giving way in downtown Caracas.

The FactSeeker Evidence: Digital forensics trace the original source of this footage back to the city of Kahramanmaraş, Turkey. The video actually documents the post-earthquake recovery phase following the catastrophic February 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes.

The Reality: According to original reporting and archives from Turkish news outlet Ensonhaber , the clip does not depict a building spontaneously falling during an active earthquake. Instead, it captures a scheduled,  controlled demolition  of a severely compromised apartment complex by local authorities.

The Verdict: MISLABELED / RECYCLED FOOTAGE

3. The Instantly Crumbling Multi-Story Facade

Another terrifying video shows a multi-story concrete apartment building instantly fracturing and completely pancaking down into a busy urban street within mere seconds.

The Claims Monitored: Most notably shared by the verified X account CENTAURO `@Octavio_01` using an emotional caption: “No hay palabras para describir este golpe de la naturaleza a los hermanos de Venezuela, les debemos toda la ayuda posible 🙏” “There are no words to describe this blow from nature to the brothers of Venezuela; we owe them all possible help”

The FactSeeker Evidence:  The footage actually dates back to February 6, 2023, during the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in southern Turkey and Syria. Archival video coverage published by the New York Post  proves the video captures the real-time collapse of a building in Şanlıurfa, Turkey. Attaching a highly sympathetic caption to recycled media is a calculated engagement-farming tactic meant to weaponize empathy and lower a reader’s natural skepticism.

The Verdict: MISLABELED FOOTAGE WITH MISLEADING CAPTION

4. “Life Can Change in 10 Seconds”

An emotional video showing violent indoor shaking, swaying light fixtures, and sudden structural fracturing gained massive traction on X, framed as a firsthand survival clip from South America.

The Claims Monitored:  Posted by user `@Lismarblue` with the caption: “God bless Venezuela. Life can change in 10 seconds.”

The FactSeeker Evidence: A cross-examination of international news coverage from major reporting outlets, including the BBC, CNN, and Al Jazeera, confirms that this video has been lifted entirely from Asian news cycles.

The Reality: The video actually depicts the impact of the massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Mindanao region in the southern Philippines on June 8, 2026. The original on-the-scene reporting documents morning tremors that shook the Philippine archipelago earlier this month, which has now been re-uploaded with a Spanish prayer to exploit the trending situation in Venezuela.

The Verdict:  MISLABELED FOOTAGE FROM A SEPARATE 2026 EVENT

The Harm of “Engagement Farming” During a Crisis

Misinformation during a humanitarian crisis isn’t harmless,  it actively impedes rescue operations. When fake or exaggerated videos of total destruction go viral, they clog communication networks, misdirect emergency response expectations, and induce unnecessary panic among families trying to reach loved ones in Venezuela.

As search-and-rescue teams continue to navigate the rubble, social media users are urged to stop sharing unverified, high-spectacle videos. Rely strictly on verified updates from regional emergency services and established international journalistic outlets.
