Social media claims that dams at Victoria, Moragahakanda and Kotmale reservoirs were at risk are false. Officials and the Disaster Management Centre confirmed there was no danger.

News circulating on social media claimed that dams at the Moragahakanda, Victoria and Kotmale reservoirs were at risk of breaking due to the prevailing bad weather. The rumours caused panic among residents, prompting some to leave their homes.

FactSeeker investigated these claims and confirmed through government officials that the information was false. Officials stated that only 80 cubic meters of water per second had been released on the relevant days and that there was no risk of any structural failure.

The Disaster Management Centre also issued an official statement confirming that there was no danger to any of the dams at Victoria, Moragahakanda or Kotmale. Several media outlets reported the same clarification.
