Claim that President Anura Kumara is distributing cash gifts in partnership with the World Bank is false!

A message is circulating on WhatsApp claiming that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in partnership with the World Bank, is distributing Rs. 10,000 cash gifts to poor individuals in Sri Lanka.

Following a request received by FactSeeker to verify the authenticity of this claim, we looked into the matter.

The message further stated that recipients should click on the following link and answer some questions in order to receive the cash gift. Upon visiting the link, it became apparent that all individuals shown claiming to have received the money were foreigners. Additionally, the Sinhala language used contained multiple grammatical errors and unclear phrases.

To verify whether the link mentioned in the message was legitimate, we analyzed it using the URLVoid website. According to the results, the link was confirmed to be fraudulent.

Inquiries made to the Presidential Media Division revealed that this was indeed a fake message. Furthermore, the division had published an official announcement on its official Facebook page confirming the message was false. You can view that announcement here.

Accordingly, FactSeeker confirms that the WhatsApp message claiming President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is offering Rs. 10,000 cash gifts to poor citizens in Sri Lanka is fake, and the link included in the message is a fraudulent one.
