December 11, 2025

Following the recent national disaster, warnings issued by the Department of Meteorology have come under heavy criticism online. Much of this backlash stemmed from an interview given by the Department’s Executive Director to Derana television. Amid this discussion, several photographs began circulating on social media, alleging that Derana’s news clip had been published on the department’s official website.

These images referenced comments made by Director Athula Karunanayake on November 12th and started spreading widely from December 8th. FactSeeker examined the authenticity of these claims.

The news report in question was broadcast on Derana on November 28th, highlighting the Director’s earlier remarks.

However, a review of the Department of Meteorology’s official website from November 28th to December 8th revealed that no such content had ever been published. In fact, no news material from any media organization has appeared on the website at any time.

Furthermore, when contacted by FactSeeker, Director Athula Karunanayake confirmed that the department had not uploaded or shared any such news item.

Therefore, FactSeeker verifies that the images circulating on social media — claiming to show Derana news footage published on the Department of Meteorology’s official website  are completely false.
