“Manipur is destroyed! A young woman was shot dead in the street,” a few media outlets and social media posted. FactSeeker also observed the spreading of this news on Twitter and Facebook pages.

Following a Google reverse image search, FactSeeker found that this video was recorded in Myanmar in early December last year.

When FactSeeker further investigated the authenticity of the video being shared on social media, it found two articles published in December last year on the Irrawaddy and Missima websites. According to these websites, a woman, accused of being a Pew Cha Hti cadre was beaten to death on the road by several armed men.

The woman has been identified as Ay Mar and is 24 years old (a teacher). The reports said that she belonged to the local revolutionary group and was killed by the army of the country.

Also in the news released by the media in Myanmar, The National Unity Government (NUG) has stated that an investigation will be conducted into this incident and effective action will be taken against those involved as this incident is completely unacceptable as per military regulations and rules. The media further reported that the statement issued by the country’s government should investigate the murder of a woman on the street in Tamu-Sagaing area of Myanmar and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Therefore, FactSeeker confirms that false news is being spread on social media that an incident reported in December last year in Myanmar has been misreported as recently held in Manipur.
