One industry that increases Sri Lanka's revenue is the tourism sector. The tourism industry in Sri Lanka was severely impacted by the Easter attack, and it quickly collapsed during the Covid pandemic. Media sources from the past period said that the number of tourists arriving is increasing daily and halting the collapse. As a result, Fact Seeker decided to examine the tourist arrival statistics.

Observing the data, it appears that a high level of tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka has been recorded in 2017. As of January 2017, 2 19,360 tourists had arrived, and in December of that year, 2 44,536 tourist arrivals had been recorded. In the year 2018, when the Easter attack took place in Sri Lanka, there was a slight decrease in the number of tourists, but there has been a certain amount of tourist arrival. 1,29,466 tourists visited Sri Lanka in May 2018 after the Easter attack in April. By December of that year, tourist arrivals had increased to 2,53,169.
Tourist arrivals came to a complete halt in 2020 when the COVID-19 epidemic spread, and the number of tourist arrivals decreased to 393 in December after the opening of the country that year. In 2022, the struggle in the country due to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka also hindered the arrival of tourists. In December of that year, a total of 91,961 tourists had visited the country. By December 2023, it had grown to 2,10,352.
In the first quarter of the year 2024 (January, February, and March), there is a high tourist arrival, which is 635,784.

 

Furthermore, the Ministry of Tourism has reported that the country has received 1.03 billion US dollars in revenue in the first quarter of this year, compared to 500 million US dollars in the first quarter of 2023.
