Did the police department issue an announcement to inform the public?
Factseeker observed an announcement being shared through WhatsApp groups mentioning a message issued by the Sri Lankan Police asking people to be more attentive due to the current economic crisis.

As this is being shared rapidly through social media, a request was made to Fact Seeker to investigate whether this is true.
The announcement mentioned “Don’t wear expensive watches. Don’t wear expensive necklaces, bracelets, earrings. Be careful with your handbags. Men, avoid wearing expensive watches, expensive bracelets, and chains. Don’t use your expensive mobile phones in public. Try to minimize the usage of mobile phones in public. Avoid carrying strangers in the vehicle. Don’t carry more cash than necessary. Keep your atm and credit cards safe while you travel.”
Fact Seeker inquired from the Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Thalduwa in this regard. Accordingly, he mentioned that there was no such announcement had been issued by the Sri Lanka Police Department. Further, he stated this announcement was circulated through social media about a year ago and at that time the Police Media Division also announced in this regard.
Accordingly, Factseeker confirms that this announcement shared through social media is fake.
