FactSeeker investigated said claim by inquiring from the Tangalle and Weeraketiya regional offices of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) who stated that according to instructions received from the electrical engineering department, security lights provided under parliamentary privileges for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former MP Namal Rajapaksa were removed.

They clarified that this was not an electricity disconnected due to unpaid bills.

Some social media posts claimed that this was related to the removal of additional electricity supply for Namal Rajapaksa’s wedding.

To further investigate this matter, we consulted Ranjan Jayalal, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Electricity Employees Union. He stated that every MP receives security electric lamps for their official residences as part of the privileges granted to them.

However, the MPs lost the privilege with the dissolution of Parliament and the electric supply lines were removed.

FactSeeker further observed articles published on several news websites indicating that electricity connection had been disconnected.

Accordingly, FactSeeker confirms that reports stating electricity was cut off at former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Carlton House due to unpaid bills are false.
