A series of images depicting a flower identical to the common lotus flower called the ‘Brahmin Lotus’ or ‘Mythical Rock Lotus’ circulating on social media caught the attention of FactSeeker .
Deputy Director of the Department of National Botanic Gardens Lumali Bandara stated that no research has been conducted on any plant species or flower species known as “Brahmin Lotus” and that this is something generated through artificial intelligence (AI).
In order to verify the scientific background of the said flower, FactSeeker contacted Professor Priyangani Senanayake from the Department of Plant and Animal Sciences at the University of Kelaniya who said that ‘Nelumbo Nucifera’, commonly known as the lotus, is an aquatic plant species which cannot be grown on land.
In ancient Buddhist, Hindu religious, and Chinese myths, the Brahmin Lotus or Mystical Rock Lotus is considered to symbolize purification, fortune, and to be associated with disasters. However, there is still no confirmation of such a plant based on scientific evidence.
Accordingly, FactSeeker confirms that images of the alleged ‘Brahmin Lotus’ or ‘Mythical Rock Lotus’ are false.
