FactSeeker observed several letters allegedly issued by the National People’s Power (NPP) circulating on social media. As the letters carried controversial statements, FactSeeker stepped in to investigate.
The letter addressed to media heads and journalists read “New phone number for providing information about propaganda,” appears to have been signed by a member of NPP. The article also includes a contact number for reporting individuals spreading propaganda.
The date mentioned in the article, which has been circulating on social media recently, is from 2022. The article is signed by retired Major General Aruna Jayasekara, who is said to be the Chief of the Tri-Forces Retirees’ Association.
When inquired about the letter, NPP’s media coordinator said that the article is entirely fake.
Furthermore, another article titled “National Security Committee Formed.” This article, which includes the names of several former tri-force members and also bears the signature of NPP’s presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The media coordinator confirmed that this too, was fake.
Furthermore, when inquired from Parliamentarian Harini Amarasuriya, she confirmed that both articles were false. She also stated that the National People’s Power did not issue such articles and that this is an instance of false propaganda.
