A group of MPs representing Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna are preparing to appoint former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister, some media reports said.
The reports quoted a statement from Channa Jayasumana, MP, that the said group has asked him to support the move.
To appoint Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister, either current Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has to resign or President Ranil Wickremesinghe has to sack him from his post.
When FactSeeker asked about it, an official of the President’s Office said that as far as he is concerned, the president has no plans to remove the Prime Minister.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Dinesh Gunawardena has not received a request from any party to resign. The statement further said that reports that the PM is contemplating his resignation are untrue.
