A statement allegedly made by the leader of the National People’s Power (NPP)/ Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) saying the NPP would stop all Samurdhi benefits, has been widely shared in social media.
Upon enquiries, the FactSeeker found out that the NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, MP, has not made such a statement.
General Secretary of the JVP, Tilvin Silva, told FactSeeker that the aim of the JVP is to make Sri Lanka a country that will be built by those who earn through their businesses, not a country where people depend on state benefits.
The party stressed upon the imporatnace of creating programmes aiming at that, he said, but has never said the NPP would stop Samurdhi benefits if they come to power.
The FactSeeker could not speak to Anura Kumara Dissanayake. He, however, responded to our SMS confirming that the story being shared in social media was fake.
