A message is circulating on social media stating that a cash prize of Rs. 30,000 could be won in celebration of the People’s Bank’s 60th anniversary.
The link in the message leads to a screen with four questions to be answered in Sinhala and Tamil and then leads to a screen with 9 gift boxes from which one should be selected.
Upon selecting the “correct prize box” the users will be requested to share the said message via WhatsApp or Messenger with 5 groups or up to 20 contacts entering personal details to complete registration.
During the technical examination to verify the message we came across the following on the official Facebook page of the Sri Lanka Peoples’ Bank.
“We would like to inform our loyal customers that Peoples’ Bank will not conduct any competition or a raffle draw as such and will not be deceived by such fraudulent activities!”
Furthermore, many foreigners had stated that they had received prizes in the relevant message, but it was found that no Sri Lankan had commented on it.
Therefore, the message that the Peoples’ Bank of Sri Lanka offers Rs. 30,000 on the occasion of their 60th anniversary is a fake message.
