A WhatsApp message is circulating stating that international students could pursue higher education in the United Kingdom free of charge through the Commonwealth Scholarship Program 2021/ 2022. The message reads,
“APPLY FOR UNITED KINGDOM SCHOLARSHIP 2021, FULLY FUNDED SCHOLARSHIP TO STUDY FOR FREE IN Uk.
It takes few seconds to apply. Dont miss this opportunity.
Benfits of COMMONWEALTH 2021 scholarship Program.
The scholarship will cover.

The link provided at the bottom of the WhatsApp message has a form to be filled by the applicant inquiring applicant personal information such as name, e-mail address, country of origin, and the intended course of study. At the bottom of the application form, the Commonwealth Scholarships Program is mentioned as the main sponsor for this fully-funded scholarship program.
Upon fact-checking this item, we inquired the British Council Head Office in the United Kingdom, the British Council in Sri Lanka and overseas, and the Commonwealth and Development Office of the British High Commission. These institutions responded that they are unaware of the origins of the above message, and that the Commonwealth Scholarships is an independently run body, and that the British Council and the British High Commission are conducting separate scholarship programs except the Commonwealth Scholarships.
They further clarified about this WhatsApp message;
“It doesn’t look correct (spelling mistakes), it has American but English spelling, and incorrect information etc. Applications are normally done through nominating agencies and would not be advertised through WhatsApp. The alumni might share/promote opportunities as such but this does not seem to be the case here. The official information source is accessed here – announcements for 2022/23 deadlines are awaited: Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships – Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (fcdo.gov.uk).”
In conclusion, the British Council Head Office in the United Kingdom, the British Council in Sri Lanka, and abroad, and the Commonwealth and Development Office of the British High Commission are not linked with this WhatsApp message and it is confirmed as fake.
