A Whatsapp message is exchanged reading that the Nestle company will be giving away over 1000 smart watches and mobile accessories to celebrate its 80th anniversary, and that the winners will be given the opportunity to share the said message on Whatsapp to win a Samsung Galaxy S21.
A technical inspection of the web page with the above message revealed that it is an insecure web page with the risk of hacking user data on computers and mobile phones. The web page also does not show a direct connection between the Nestle company.
When Nestle was inquired about the authenticity of the message, Nestle stated it was completely untrue and that the Nestle company would not offer any such prizes.
When inquired about this, Yasiru Mathew Kuruvitage, the President of the Information Technology Society of Sri Lanka (ITSSL), said that the general public should avoid distributing such messages as cyber attackers are more likely to access personal information and social media user accounts by sending such messages and that malware is more likely to be installed on mobile phones.
